unveiling

And a very royal unveiling it was, indeed! In a music-filled, mural-celebrating block party of sorts we took over Royal Liquor’s parking lot to draw the curtain on Paint Encinitas’ first mural project!!! We were so stoked to see the amazing turnout of over 100 people! Friends, sponsors and community members all came in droves to catch the first glimpses of Skye Walker‘s beautiful mural entitled, “Remember California”.

Jax Meyer’s our fearless leader [as well as founder and chief of operations] gave a fabulous introductory speech, welcoming the community and describing how much effort was put into the manifestation of this mural. Next, Skye gave us a great description of what the mural means to him. Then, without further adieu, with the help of fabulous volunteers, the big tarp was pulled up, revealing the mural’s magnificent final product. Such an exciting moment! The crowd oohed and aahed– people are so excited to see new art in our community.

The day continued on with equal fanfare. Local band, Second Cousins, serenaded us with floating Indie/Rock/Folk tunes, creating a blissfully mellow vibe throughout the day. The event hummed with a collective excitement as we all took in the new mural.

Sponsors showed their support by setting up booths for passers-by to explore. Mizu hydrated us with water, Jeremiah Miller showcased his beautiful wooden L.O.V.E. letters, Priscilla Bernstein shared her Metta 8 Jewelry popup boutique, The Rock Project kept up the creative vibes by setting up a spot for us to paint our own shareable art rock, Coastn Surf and Skate set up a rad popup shop and Leucadia 101 Main Street Association supplied us with the popup tents, tables, and chairs. At the end of the event we had a fabulous raffle with prizes donated by each of our sponsors.

This event and this mural are only the beginning of many impactful art installations and events to come. The success of the unveiling showed that it’s not just us– the arts are valued by everyone in our community. Seeing so many community members there to show their support reminded us of why we are doing this. To spark a dialogue amongst the community about the importance of public art as well as the exploration of how we can manifest them even more in our little gem of a city.
