And so the painting begins! Today local artist and muralist Skye Walker began painting his original mural “Remember California”, kicking off Paint Encinitas’ mural arts program. With lawn chairs and blankets set up to view the action as well as a roadside sign reading “HONK if you love Paint Encinitas” to rally passers-by, our mural-in-progress is fast becoming a major Leucadia scene.
After sketching out the design yesterday, Skye hit the wall with color this morning starting at sunrise. This mural, on the north wall of Royal Liquor in Leucadia, marks Paint Encinitas’ first mural to go up as part of our mural arts program. Its a program dedicated to bringing the arts to Encinitas, one wall at a time.
“I’m feeling very excited,” Jax, our Founder and Chief Coordinator, said this morning, “I have butterflies right now and I had them yesterday when we were prepping it.” Jax has indeed been working tirelessly until this moment.
“It’s the very first one, so there are things I don’t know. We’ve been very flexible with the process,” Jax said. But finally, the creative juices are flowing, “The paint touched the wall and that was really the blast off for the entire mural arts program.”
Throughout the process, she’s joined forces with Skye Walker to manifest her vision into a reality. The mural is based off a painting Skye did several years ago. So when he submitted it to Jax a few months ago, she knew he was the right artist for the job. “It’s a beautiful wall,” Skye said, “I’m honored to be the guy that gets to paint it.”
The mural was given its title, “Remember California” because it embodies the essence of our beautiful state. It depicts a woman with [soon to be painted] red hair emerging from the ocean and holding up a California Poppy. “She’s an ode to mother nature,” Skye explained.
And its beauty isn’t going by unnoticed. Dog walkers and beach hoppers alike have been stopping by all day to find out about Paint Encinitas and our big project. So come stop by and catch a glimpse of the action!
Skye will be working on the mural all week to be ready for the Mural Unveiling Event on Sunday, June 29th at 12:00pm. There’s going to be live music, a kid activity with The Rock Project, Jewelry for sale by Priscilla Bernstein, Coastn Surf an Skate booth, munchies from fish 101 and Mizu water, a raffle, prize giveaways and more!
“Being able to bring this to Encinitas is an honor,” Jax concluded, “It’s really neat to see all these people showing their support.”
Come show yours by dropping by Royal Liquor this week, or by coming to the Mural Unveiling Event next Sunday! See you there!
